英語豆知識[1]

誰もが学校で習った英会話。

生徒: Hello Ms~

先生: How are you everybody?

生徒: I am fine, and you?

先生: I'm fine too thank you. Sit down please. So today, we are going to be learning...

この様な会話をここ一年留学してて耳にしたことは一度もありません。

How are you? (調子はどうですか？)に対する解答例。

-soso (日本人がまあまあです、の意で使う言葉。nativeはどちらかというと良くない、の意味で使います。)

-Great

-Good Good

-Average

-I'm alright

-How are you?(日本語に直訳すれば調子はどうですか、だがこんにちはの意味で使う人も。)

会話のスターターとして使われるHow are you?ですが、他の言い方も？

-What's going on?(直訳では何が起きているの？？だけどhow are youと同じ使われ方。

-What's popping?(ふざけた人が使うイメージ)

-How are you doing?

-What's up?

-How's it going?(Itってなに？って思っていますが、特に意味は無いようです。I'm goodなどの様に、自分を主語にして答えます。

[おまけ]私が先生と行う会話例

私: Exucuse me? Could I talk to you for a second?

先生: Oh hello. I've heard that you had some problems with this class that you've recently changed to?

私: Oh yes have my teacher told you about that? I think I need some following up lessons.

先生: Yeah? I can ask that to your teacher later today then.

私: Really. Could you do that for me. I appreciate that. Thank you so much.

先生: Sweet-as. That is my job to take care of you students so. Now get back to your class or you're gonna get in some trouble.

私: I will, thanks. See you around then?

先生: Okay see you, have a good day.

この様に、会話をスムーズにつなげるには覚えた定型文を毎回使いまくるわけではなく、定型文に単語を組み合わせて入れるのが大切です。I am fine, thank you and you.を、I'm doing pretty great. What about you? How's your day going?と言ってみるだけでも、ネイティブに近ずく一歩になる。心がける様にしているといつの間にか周りに一目置かれる存在に？
